I’m going to share one of my best ‘tried and true’ pie recipes with you. This is one of those special pies and it is fast and easy.
I call it Chocolate Truffle Pie…
1 baked pie crust OR pre-made graham cracker crust
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs or pasteurized eggs or egg beaters
- Melt chips and set aside to cool.
- Cream butter and sugar until very fluffy
- Add vanilla and melted chips
- Add eggs (cold from fridge), one at a time, beating vigorously after each egg.
- Pour into pie shell and smooth on top. (Can be frozen)
- Serve with whipped cream and chocolate shaves or sprinkles.
This pie takes about 15 minutes to make (not including crust) and must be chilled for about 2-3 hours and must be served cold! Its a real winner!
Bon Appetite!

OK… I know I probably sound bias, but I have to be completely honest and say that our two new Young Women LDS Fabric prints are probably my new favorites. They are absolutely nothing less than SUPER COOL!! They just arrived and I’m tickled ‘green’ to recommend them. Right now they come in a double brushed 100% cotton flannel (full 44″/45″ width) but in early fall we will have the same prints in our cotton print line-up. They are very popular and I assume that will stay the case…
“Young Women Values“ showcases the Young Womens Values in printed words of Faith, Divine Nature, Individual Worth, Knowledge, Choice and Accountability, Good Works and Integrity sprinkled among a happy and energetic floral arrangement. We have some great matching colors for this series.
“Young Women” shows an adorable young woman with matching flowers accented with bee’s a buzzing and an iconic small red and white checker-square which shows the words “Young Woman” with a heart in the middle of the words. Just too cute and a big recommend from Kathleen!

Oh Boy… I have been so busy posting new patterns I think my fingers are going to wear out! I am happy to report that we are posting new products and patterns on our LDS Fabric website. Lots of them!
I am very selective which ones I will carry. Many of these I have already made myself. Several I have not made but have personally reviewed them for their quality and interest. There are some real great patterns for beginners and NO ONE should feel intimidated so as to not venture forth and dive into a quilt pattern!!!
A New Trend?
A new trend that I think I’m picking up on among quilters is that many are wanting a quilt pattern that allows them lower time commitment to make but yet produce a great look and feel. The time-factor of making the quilt seems to be at the core of this challenge. We have too little time and high expectations! This reminds me of a story I heard once by Elder L. Tom Perry when he was visiting our stake conference as our visitor… It seems he was visiting at one of his children’s homes one day and while looking at the family calendar posted on the wall, he said he saw how full it was with all sorts of activities. Everyone was going in every direction… and he picked up a pencil and started to erase. His point was that we are putting too many activities into our daily routines and need to simplify… With regards to quilting, there are indeed many wonderful prints that lend itself to being fairly fast with great results. I have posted some of those patterns for the over-stressed and over-extended! Better to have two completed quilts – than ten unfinished ones… Call me if you need a recommendation! Bon Appetite!

I am pleased to announce the new arrival of our first three LDS themed cotton prints. We have named them “Zion’s Daughters”; “Sons of Helaman” and “I Hope They Call Me On A Mission”. These are high quality 100% cotton prints which I am sure anyone will be pleased with. These are the first of several cottons in the LDS Fabric line up.
We launched our website at the beginning of last April, however most of our fabric was in flannel. Indeed flannel has its wonderful place, but the addition of cotton prints have always been part of our plan. Now finally they are starting to arrive. In the months ahead you will see many more… A lovely Book of Mormon line up is due this coming fall. You will see some of our existing flannel patterns become available in cotton print also, as well as many new prints which include:
- Book of Mormon series
- Young Woman and Young Woman Values
- Noah’s Ark series
- Scouting l and Scouting II
- Fairy series
- Two wonderful Nativity prints for Christmas
- Cowboy series
- And a very exciting Pirate series in cotton
These and many more will be arriving throughout the year.

Our oldest son had just left to serve on his mission in Mississippi. I was so happy to finally have our son on a mission. My friends forgot to tell me how much I would miss him… There I was in the dairy section of Safeway, crying my eyes out thinking about my missionary in the MTC. Right there next to the milk I came up with an idea and off to the fabric store I went. I made him a simple but beautiful missionary quilt – 8 inch squares, and only two fabrics. One was a printed pattern the other a coordinating solid fabric. It was a simple patchwork quilt. In the solid squares I embroidered things like – “Called to Serve; ” Elder Jensen; ” We love you”; Mississippi Jackson Mission” … things like that. As he left the MTC it was waiting for him when he arrived at the new mission home in Jackson. He said it was like a big hug from home all the nights on his mission. That was exactly the feelings we were hoping he would have.
Being a little older and wiser my second missionary quilt was done six months before our second son was called. I tucked it into his suitcase as we left for the airport to take him to the MTC in Provo. He said it was a wonderful surprise as he unpacked his suitcase and found it. Both our sons came home with their quilts. Both quilt and missionary – a little ragged, a little dusty, and a little worn-out. These two quilts today symbolize to our sons the honor, endurance and memory of a hard but joyful mission.
Our third son turns 18 next week. He also will have a lovely quilt when he leaves. It will also be made with love and when he wraps himself in it at night – our family will be wrapping our arms around him too.
Happy Quilting, Kathleen

ROLL RECIPE:
2 cups warm water (110 to 115 degrees)
2/3 cup nonfat dry milk (instant or non-instant)
2 tablespoons dry yeast
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1/3 cup butter, shortening, or margarine
1 egg
5 to 5 ½ cups all-purpose flour
In large bowl or electric mixer (i use my kitchen aid fitted w/a dough hook), combine water and milk powder; stir until milk dissolves. Add yeast, then sugar, salt, butter, egg, and 2 cups flour. Mix on low speed until ingredients are wet, then for 2 minutes at medium speed. Add 2 cups flour; mix on low speed until ingredients are wet, then for 2 minutes at medium speed. (Dough will be getting stiff and remaining flour may need to be mixed in by hand). Add about ½ cup flour and mix again, by hand or mixer. Dough should be soft, not overly sticky, and not stiff (It is not necessary to use the entire amount of flour).
Scrape dough off sides of bowl and pour about one tablespoon of vegetable oil all around sides of bowl. Turn dough over in bowl so it is covered with oil. (This helps prevent dough from drying out). Cover with plastic and allow to rise in warm place until double in size.
Follow recipe for Orange Rolls at this point…
½ cup butter, melted
Zest from two oranges
¼ cup sugar
1 recipe Orange Icing (see below)
After dough has risen the first time, divide in half. Combine melted butter and oragne zest in a small bowl. Roll first half of dough to rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Brush half of your orange butter over dough. Sprinkle with half sugar. Roll up like you would cinnamon rolls. Repeat with second half. Cut your logs every 1.5″ or so with a sharp knife. Place on lightly greased baking sheet ( i put all of the rolls onto a jelly roll pan). Cover with a flour cloth and allow to rise until double in size, about 40 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, until light golden brown. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter. Allow to cool about 10 to 15 minutes, drizzle with Orange Icing.
Orange Icing:
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice (reserve from zested oranges used in Orange Roll Recipe)
2 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream, or 2 tablespoons half-and-half
Place powdered sugar and orange juice in a small bowl; add half the amount of heavy cream. With spoon or mixer, mix until smooth. If icing is too thick, add more cream a little at a time. The hotter the rolls are when frosted, the thicker the frosting needs to be. Note: You can add more orange flavor by mixing in 1 to 2 teaspoons orange zest if desired.

We are so pleased to report that the new Robert Kaufman kona cotton prints have arrived. The good news is that they are VERY nice - better than expected… The bad news is that they are really going fast and Kaufman has already sold out of several of these prints from their first production run (and our stock is going quickly too!). For those “sold out” prints, we are waiting on them to received stock from their second production run due to be delivered to us by mid August. I have also posted these prints in our Fat Quarter category as well… ENJOY!!!
